OVERVIEW BACKGROUND

The Regulations for the Prohibition of the Use, Manufacturing, Import, and Export of Asbestos and Asbestos Containing Materials, which form part of the Environment Conservation Act of 1989, was promulgated on 28 March 2008.

Asbestos is a harmful material that can cause serious health problems if it is inhaled. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other respiratory illnesses. Therefore, removing asbestos roofs is important for ensuring the safety and health of people who work or live in buildings that contain this material.

Asbestos was widely used in construction materials, including roofing before its dangers were fully understood. As a result, many older buildings still have asbestos-containing roofs. If the roof is old, damaged, deteriorating, or needs to be replaced for any reason, it is important to remove the asbestos-containing materials to prevent the release of asbestos fibers into the air.

Removing an asbestos roof can only be done by the accredited asbestos contractor in accordance with the requirements of the Asbestos Abatement Regulations 2020 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No 85 of 1993) and by professionals who have the proper training, equipment, and experience to safely handle and dispose of the asbestos-containing material. The process of removing asbestos roofs can be complex and involves strict safety protocols to protect workers and the environment.

WORK PROCEDURE:

1. Site Assessment: A thorough assessment of the site is conducted to identify the presence and extent of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) and determine the appropriate course of action.

2. Removal Plan: An asbestos removal plan is developed, which outlines the procedures for safely removing and disposing of ACMs in accordance with applicable regulations and guidelines. (Thlago AIA).

3. Asbestos Removal: The removal process typically involves using specialized equipment and techniques to carefully remove the ACMs without disturbing them and safely packaging and labeling the materials for transport to an approved disposal facility. (Thlago Asbetech).

4. Air Monitoring: During the removal process, air monitoring is conducted to ensure that asbestos fibers are not being released into the air. This involves collecting air samples and analyzing them for asbestos fibers. (Thlago AIA).

5. Clearance Testing: After the removal process is complete, clearance testing is conducted to ensure that the area is free of asbestos fibers and safe for re-occupation.

6. Disposal: The ACMs are transported to an approved disposal facility and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulations and guidelines.

Throughout the entire process, strict safety protocols are followed to protect workers and the public from exposure to asbestos fibers. The scope of work may also include providing training and education to workers and building occupants and ongoing monitoring and maintenance to ensure that ACMs are safely managed and disposed of.
